Last year I attended a writing conference. Many of the presenters were of the horror genre. While I had only ever read popular fiction by the likes of Nora Roberts, Dean Koontz and Veronica Roth, back in the day I did enjoy a Stephen King novel or two. So, I entered the vendor room to find a man and woman sitting at a table with some creepy comic drawings and a children’s book.

This man was Stan Yan. The book was There’s a Zombie in the Basement. While I was initially drawn in by the quality of his art, Stan and I started talking. I explained that this story might be a little too scary for my over imaginative 4-year-old. A smile spread over his sales assistant’s face and he explained that his 4 year-old, was his muse. His son had become scared of his drawings. So, in an attempt to help him see the comic drawings as nothing more than silly fiction, Stan Yan wrote, illustrated, and published this bedtime story.

At that, I was sold. And boy did this tiny investment pay off.

My little boy loves this story, still. It has the right amount of spooky to keep him interested with a sweetness that keeps him tucked in at night and not running into my room at every noise.

Yan writes very rhythmically and it is easy for mom and dad to pick up on. By the first turn of the page, you are able to read through the story without skipping a beat. It is also fun for my son to “read” (recite from memory) as we go through to the end.

Do not be mistaken by the dark nature of the art. These monsters aren’t so scary after all and I give this story 5 stars!

  1. Dear Dacia,
When my kids were small and monsters lived under their beds, I used to make up a bottle anti-monster spray. I took a a spray bottle of water with a few squirts of my daily perfume added and that became my monster spray. Since my little ones always had a tendency to put their nose in the crook of my neck and snuggle they were familiar with that scent, it offered comfort and safety. Every night as a preventative measure, I’d spritz under the bed and in the closets, the two most frequent hiding spots for the nighttime monsters. It went a long way towards warding off midnight trips into mom and dad’s bed. Now that I have grand babies and the monsters are back, I’ve told their mama’s about the spray. Off to Amazon to purchase Mr. Yan’s book! Thanks for the tip!
